The Day the Sun Stood Still

Gaudete Sunday

Some days I just can't help myself.

Coming soon to a theater near you:

The Day the Sun Stood Still

Which inspires the following bit of poetic whimsy:

Earth's orbit twists, her orbit turns; the Earth goes 'round the sun.
Milankovitch and Schwabe and Wolf are laughing as they run.
And glaciers grow, and glaciers shrink, a vexing conundrum.
Magnetic fields wax and wane; and sunspots go and come.

We must stop global cooling!  No, 'tis warming that must stop!
And people scurry, energized by a global thermal cop.
All day they worry: what can we do?  The Childrun(tm) are at risk!
Alas! The world is all askew!   (But the weather's turning brisk.)

They hug the earth; above their heads, celestial matters roll
As they have rolled millennia since, and millennia still to toll.

The sun's gone out; her magfield's damped, and spots are scarcely seen.
Ah, pay no mind to the welkin blue if you would be thought as "green."

Consensus is what rules the day; there must be no dispute!
The tides go out; the tides come in. A broom! cries King Canute.

And "God gave Noah the rainbow sign.
No more water but the fire next time."

This was a chart from Denmark which I saw in the early 1980s
