I'd kill for that future. A darned sight better than ubiquitous pornography and herpaderp discussion forums.

I'd put it the other way round: once SF encouraged such dreams.

I would say that SF still (sometimes) encourages those dreams, but fantasy doesn't and never did.

For many years, SF was full of stories that appealed to young men who wanted to be scientists or engineers, or at least looked up to other mean who wanted to be such, but lately it is hard to distinguish a lot of it from fantasy, and it seems to me that much of the rest depicts a grim future that none of us would really want to live in. (I am not blind to the irony of my icon choice here.)
