Easter

The lesson we have learned is that just as with potato chips, one does not eat just one section of a Ghirardelli 72% cacao chocolate bar. Only put on 1.5 pounds, but I would have been better off not eating it at all and keeping off the weight.

Slept in until noon again, did breakfast, and wasted a couple of hours on Civicrack before throwing down on the long-delayed Rule 5 Sunday. Going to start working shortly on tomorrow's Live at Five, the first in I can't remember how many days.

After posting Rule 5 Sunday, I took the garbage out and headed for Red Robin. Unfortunately, the dinner experience was affected for the worse by two middle-aged women who spent their entire time bitching loudly about their soon-to-be exes and reading text messages out loud. As I remarked on FB, I should have just gotten a doggie bag and gotten the f*ck out. That having been said, the burger and salad were excellent as usual.

Big Ass Spider! (SyFy movie)

That movie title certainly gets your attention!  It was on the SyFy channel Saturday night, and I decided to take a look 'cause I was curious; I realized fairly soon that it was one of those comedy/horror combos with the gore kept to a minimum--well, as much as is going to happen in one of these movies.  People were dropping like flies...  I've seen this genre before; I wonder if it's the same producers.  Anyway, it was fun.  The sidekick, who lived, was Mexican and funny.

I watched the beginning of Bigfoot after that--also on the SyFy channel; I don't usually watch Bigfoot movies; I was just curious about the beginning, which was interesting: A dragonfly lands on a plant and is eaten by a frog; the frog jumps in the water and is eaten by a fish; the fish is caught by a bear on the bank; the bear is shot by a hunter; and Bigfoot gets the hunter.  Yes, it's a cliche, but it worked.

I caught the very end of Piranha, which was on first.  I've seen endings with teasers about surviving monsters, but I don't recall seeing an ending like that!  Oh, and I see that Sharknado 2 is upcoming (July, as I recall).  I liked where a shark jumped up and took a bite out of the letter S in the title before dropping off.

#4200: He is Risen!

(Verse 1)
Low in the grave He lay, Jesus my Savior,
Waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord!

(Refrain)
Up from the grave He arose, (He arose!)
With a mighty triumph o'er His foes, (He arose!)
He arose a victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! (He arose!) He arose! (He arose!)
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

(Verse 2)
Vainly they watch His bed, Jesus my Savior;
Vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord!

(Refrain)

(Verse 3)
Death cannot keep its prey, Jesus my Savior;
He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord!

(Refrain)

comparing comparisons

This one struck me when I was talking idly with chorale about TV show characters: Gomez Addams is to Herman Munster as Bruce Wayne is to Clark Kent.

Basically it's a class distinction thing, I think. Bruce and Gomez both have inherited wealth and upper class habits; they could very well have visited each other's ancestral mansions as boys. But Clark and Herman are both working blokes—and Clark started out back in the days when "reporter" still was a fairly working class occupation, before it morphed into a profession. I think it was Jules Feiffer who wrote about Superman as the ultimate assimilated immigrant, and Herman could fit that pattern as well—I always imagined his last name used to have an umlaut, as the other likely option is Irish, which really doesn't seem to fit. Gomez, on the other hand, never bothered to assimilate; he's too rich to need to.

It's a minor point that Hermann is physically strong and tough, possibly superhumanly so, whereas Gomez's most important superpower is money.

But also, it just strikes me that "I'm going to dress up like a bat and fight crime!" is absolutely the sort of scheme Gomez would come up with, without a moment's worry about whether it was eccentric. He's got a faithful butler to help him (a conversation between Alfred and Lurch would be worth spying on!); he's got an erotically charged relationship with Morticia, as Bruce has with Selina; he's got a mansion that probably has hidden rooms and cellars and secret passages. Though I think if he had a kid sidekick Wednesday would be likelier than Pugsley; she's the one who had the karate lessons.

Paper Books Are Unforgiving

On a whim I decided it was time to re-read Mercedes Lackey’s The Last Herald Mage trilogy because sometimes you just need some Herald in your life.

As you can see, my paperbacks of this series are old. They are in fact the first ones I bought, way back in the ’80s when they were fresh and new; I have never sold them, because… well, Heralds. And I did pretty well with Book 1 and Book 2, despite my occasional grumbles that I couldn’t read the books in the dark, or prop them up to read while eating, that I needed more than one hand to turn the pages, etc. Then I got to Book 3, which is longer than either of the first two, but apparently needed to fit in about the same size spine/package.

…and I was squinting at the letters.

Squinting. At the letters.

My first thought was a grumbly Where’s the font size toggle on this thing? But I assure you, that was way better than my second, Oh my gosh, I can’t read tiny fonts anymore thought.

-_-

At least my Kindle lets me pretend I still have good eyes.

He is Risen

Rejoice! He is Risen indeed. Why seek ye the living among the dead?

Joyous Easter to all. Let the victory celebrations shake the world!
